L'Autre Faubourg

I was asked by Intégral Ruedi Baur Paris to assist the studio in the conception of a sign

system for a shopping mall in Cholet, France. Its two main features are the arrangement

of the shops around a circular parking lot and the strong emphasis on the accessability for

handicapped people put into the architectural concept.

A system was designed to create an interesting environment for all visitors whilst playfully

integrating equipement for the handicapped. The whole site is devided into four sections

corresponding to the four cardinal points. At each of the 360 degrees, lines emanate from

the centre and structure the pedestrian pathways. Along the outer path, rectangular pins

of 45 cm height form part of the lighting system, also displaying the actual cardinal degree.

At certain points, the pins rise to become information boards or urban furniture such as benches,

etc.. Inscribed at the end of the degree lines are the names and distances of regional villages

situated around the mall in that particular direction. Podotactile paving stones with their

elevated ribs for example are also used as basic graphic elements to mark the parking bays.
